Hiking is one of the tools our family uses to teach and get to know our kids better. Plus, it great exercise and we get to do some geocaching.
Hiking for our health
Hiking to the rescue!! The struggle in today’s society of convenience foods and electronic activities, its sometimes hard to get enough exercise. And as we get older, we find that simply cutting back on the amount we eat just doesn’t work anymore. While there are many forms of exercise to help, most require dedicated space in your home or a gym membership and special equipment. Hiking is good for almost anyone since the only requirement is a decent pair of shoes. As you build your strength and stamina, some accessories may make your hike more enjoyable, but it’s not required.
Hiking for fun
Crazy Dave’s Crew is having to hike a bit more because we are running out of park and grab geocaches. Planning a two or three-hour hike into the wood with my family or friends is becoming common. We have a great time exploring new places that most people will never see. Our kids always get a homeschooling lesson or three while we are out. We get to teach some history and/or science lessons to our children on almost every hike. Our Children are learning fun lessons they would have never gotten if they had been in public school instead of hiking and having fun with us.
Learning The Ropes
Any avid hiker will read one of our post about hiking and realize, we have no idea what we are doing. I usually spend some time trying to plan our hikes out, determining how strenuous and how long we will be hiking, but somehow it never goes the way I expect. I have learned that I may need to look at topographical maps during my planning sessions. We have also learned that backpacks and walking sticks may have some benefits.
The main thing is that we are having fun and learning as we go. Join us on the journey and I am sure you will learn what not to do.
