Thanksgiving Turkey Platter

Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving day is the busiest travel day of the year because we all get up early in the morning, fix part of the Thanksgiving feast, load the family up and head to Grandma’s house to enjoy the day with family.  We combine our dish with all of the other dishes brought by our other family members to make a obnoxiously large meal.  We spend time arguing over politics, playing football, watching the BIG parade and stuffing our faces all day and then head home both happy and sad that Thanksgiving day is finally over.

Well, this year the Crew didn’t do any of the traveling or spending time with extended family members.  We had thought of having my family into our home this year, but those plans all fell through for one reason or another.  We decided to make the best of it and have an enjoyable day with the just the Crew.

Laura decided to make a French Toast, Bread Pudding type of breakfast in the slow cooker.  All I know is it cooked in the slow cooker all night and the smell was driving me crazy.  Oh and that it was very good!! Perhaps she will find the time later to post the recipe.

I had already prepared our bacon turkey the night before so all I had to do was pre-heat the oven and slide the roasting pan out of the refrigerator and into the oven. (Smart, huh?)  After about an hour, I melted butter and smeared it all over the turkey.  I did this again every hour until it was done.  (Hey, it ain’t good if it doesn’t include butter!!)

Here is how the meal looked just before we dug in.  After hours and days of preparation, we were finally ready to eat!!  Since it was just the Crew, we didn’t bring out any of the special dishes except the turkey platter. (Easier clean up and storage later)

Thanksgiving Turkey off the bone

I started trying to carve this turkey and make big beautiful slices that would look pleasing on our plates, but the meat just kept falling off the bone.  I have never had a turkey turn out this tender and juicy!  I finally gave up and tossed the small chunks of turkey meat on the platter.  In the end, it really doesn’t matter what it looks like; it’s all about flavor and I believe this was the best tasting turkey we have EVER eaten!!

We all sat down to fill our plates after giving thanks.  Dave and Nick both requested a drum stick.  Not a problem, it has two! They each got one and then Dave asked why there was one left.  I guess all those steroids they put in them these day may be having some weird effects.  It was too good to worry about that and if it killed us, at least we would die happy.

I was shocked when no one asked for seconds, including me!!  We will be having leftovers for a month!  I guess we should have exercised our stomach muscles before the big day by having large meals leading up to it. Then they would have been stretched and ready for the workout.

Following the meal, Laura and I decided to start clearing an area for the Christmas tree to go up.  I’m not sure what happened, but we ended up rearranging and setting up Laura’s sewing area (More on that later)and rearranging Shelby’s room.  The tree is still in the attic and I am exhausted.
